Advocacy Services

Advocacy became real for us the night I lay in an ER bed, pain at a ten, while a nurse questioned whether I "really" needed medication. That moment-too familiar for many of us with sickle cell-shaped how we built Advocacy Services at YourHeart Sickle Cell Foundation in Dallas, TX.

Our Patient Rights Representation steps into those hard spaces with you. We help you understand your rights, prepare for appointments, and, when possible, stand alongside you-on the phone, by email, or in person-to make sure your voice is heard. We practice scripts together so you feel ready to say, "This is my pain plan," or "I need you to document this correctly." You don't have to walk into clinics or social-service offices feeling powerless or alone.

Through Community Outreach, we take our lived experience straight into churches, colleges, workplaces, and health fairs. We share what sickle cell really looks like in an adult body-not just textbook slides. We talk about crisis triggers, bias in care, mental health, and how family, coworkers, and friends can show up in practical ways. These events often turn strangers into allies who are ready to stand with warriors.

Our Sickle Cell Awareness Advocacy campaigns speak to the wider world: social media series, awareness-month programming, and policy-focused efforts that push for better care, more funding, and less stigma. Every post, panel, and petition is rooted in real stories-our own and those entrusted to us.

Advocacy Services means this: when systems feel heavy and dismissive, you have a community behind you. We help you put language to your experience, push back against harmful narratives, and claim the respect and care every Sickle Cell Warrior deserves. From OurHeart to YourHeart, we stand with you in the waiting rooms, at the microphones, and in every space where your life and dignity are on the line.
