Educational Programs

When I was first told, "You have sickle cell," no one really sat down and translated that into everyday life. I left with lab numbers and big words, but not much guidance on what it meant for my mornings, my job, my relationships, or my future. Educational Programs at YourHeart Sickle Cell Foundation are our way of giving warriors what many of us never received: clear, compassionate understanding of our own bodies.

Our Patient Education is personal and practical. We slow everything down-no rushing, no judgment. Together we unpack your diagnosis: What type of sickle cell do you have? What do your labs actually mean? How do medications, hydration, sleep, and stress really affect your day-to-day? We translate medical jargon into language that feels human and usable.
In these sessions, we also walk through real-life scenarios: how to explain your condition at work or school, what to do when pain starts creeping in, questions to ask before a procedure, and how to prepare an emergency folder or digital file. We talk about transition-from pediatric to adult care, from living with parents to living on your own-and what new responsibilities and rights come with each stage.

Educational Programs aren't just about information; they're about confidence. When you understand your body, you can partner with your doctors instead of feeling talked over. You can notice patterns, advocate for treatments that help, and set boundaries that protect your energy.

Every session is shaped by lived experience-we know what it feels like to be exhausted, scared, or confused by conflicting advice. Our goal is that you leave each conversation a little more grounded, a little less afraid, and a lot more equipped to say, "I know my body, and I have a plan." From OurHeart to YourHeart, we help turn your diagnosis into understanding, and understanding into power.
